The packages on the CD are compressed.  Perhaps that make the
difference?

Well, that would make program less useful, I suspect, so I would
rather try other approaches first.  For example, is the svgalib
dependency really needed when running the program in X?  Or can we
drop some of the sound system dependencies?

Not sure if that will help, as the package already is compressed with
gzip -9.

Suspect that will reduce the usability of gcompris, so perhaps not
wanted either?

It might help to rewrite the code to use libraries shared with KDE and
gnome apps, to be able to share the "load" of these dependencies.
