Why not just patch kdmrc? To me it is a bug because it offends privacy and   
makes the login process harder:  
  
echo PreselectUser=None >> /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc 
 
or better: 
-echo PreselectUser=Previous 
+echo PreselectUser=None
