I do not believe this is a hardware problem. I believe the problem is simply
that the hard drive do not have SMART enabled, while the SMART daemon tries
to check the SMART status.
Try running 'smartctl -e /dev/hda' (or whatever device your hard drive is),
and see if this work. It will enable SMART on the disk.
The fact that this is not enabled automatically, should be considered a bug. :)
I believe it is fixed in the sarge based version, as smartsuite is replaced
with smartmontools, which will enable it automatically at boot.
