Possible fix:
I remember having been rid of all these by uninstalling smartd.
It keeps track of the status of hard disks and is nice as such, but it isn't
strictly necessary.
'apt-get remove smartsuite' for Venus.
'apt-get remove smartmontools' for Sarge-based debian-edu.

Please report if this works or not, not sure if I remember right.
