Not open source.
Usage: Electronics, possibly physics. High school and up.
"Baudline is a real-time signal analysis tool and an offline time-frequency
browser. It has a built in tone generation capability and it can play back
audio files with a multitude of effects and filters. Designed for environmental
analysis missions that range from modulation parameter measurements to searching
for transient signals that go bump in the night, baudline combines fast digital
signal processing, versatile high speed displays, and continuous capture tools
for hunting down and studying elusive signal characteristics.
Capture, analyze, measure, play."
Stance on open source (from their FAQ):
"Baudline was developed in Linux, we like Linux, and we feel for the open source
movement. So we would very much like to open source baudline but after closely
watching several companies "go open source" we have noticed these hard truths:
* Opening the source code doesn't mean that legions of free developers are
going to magically appear and work on your software. The fact is that the
parent company has to maintain a team of developers to do the majority of the
work. Very few projects achieve the critical mass of developers to actually
sustain a large project.
* Just because the source is now open, it doesn't mean that the Linux
distributions are going to include it. And without this mass distribution
guarantee it is difficult to come up with a working business model based on
support and services.
* Choosing the "wrong" open source license, one that retains a little
controlling interest, like the Sun or Apple Community Source Licenses, will lead
to constant haranguing from the vocal open source majority. This will result in
the quick death of a company's open source efforts. Actually the effect appears
even more negative than that. Choosing the "wrong" license brings a lot of
bad-will towards a company. More so than not open sourcing in the first place.
So the answer to the question of open sourcing baudline is unfortunately no. We
can't do it. Such a move would completely destroy our business plan and our
company. As a consolation to the community, SigBlips is involved in some open
source activities such as X11 improvements, Linux audio driver maintenance, and
real-time scheduling development work."
Looks like it's possible to make a deal with them.
