If the MTA is set up propperly, we might re-consider using
popularity-contest to have an objective base for package selection. Of
course, one could also start a web based poll - or use the rating
system of Arnt Oves linuxsignpost. Personally, I'd drop koffice and TeX
but go for one of those that I installed recently:

(I used aptitude install - some packages included further dependencies,
some where installed or not available):

 aptitude necessary
 aranym not necessary
 audacity usefull
 blender attractive for workstation profile
 fluxbox not necessary
 gramps not necessary
 htop usefull for admin
 icewm usefull for ltsp
 kaffe free java
 kdeaccessibility usefull
 kdeaddons usefull
 kdeaddons-doc-html
 kdebindings
 kdebase-doc
 kdebase-i18n obsolete?
 kdegraphics meta package
 kdemultimedia meta package
 kdepim
 kdepim-kio-plugins
 kdepim-libs
 kdeutils
 kdewebdev
 kernel-image-2.6.8-2-686-smp for servers
 kpovmodeler extra
 ksimulus usefull
 kturtle usefull
 mozilla-browser includes mozilla composer
 mozilla-firefox-de-de German locale
mpg not necessary, some still use it
 nload usefull for admin
 ntop usefull for admin
 qt3-* 						for c++ development
 scribus extra
 tcpdump for servers
 vice not necessary (c64)
 wine usefull in hybrid areas
 xfce4 not really needed
