There's a high risk that the user database (ldap, that is) is going to
be unusable after the upgrade.
Don't know where the culprit is, it could be upgrades of the ldap
engine, changing database schemas, changing utilities or whatever.
But I have never seen even an ldif dump (see commands slapcat and
slapadd) being able to survive upgrades. At the very least, do not use
the Debian Sarge archives when doing so. The database may be able to
survive upgrades to tested Skolelinux/Sarge cd releases, but upgrading
core utilities from the Debian archive is bound for disaster.
Also note that much of the work that is *yet* to do for the freezing of
Sarge is ensuring a smooth upgrade from Woody.
So you can just as well prepare for a reinstall from the beginning.
If you have lists of all users, possibly with default passwords, and
insert them in the same order as previously inserted, you'll be able to
go by without too much hassle.
Bear in mind though, that wlus isn't adapted for reinserting data from
backups on a new install (that means, feeding users from a list
separately from the creation of home directories) in the least. So you
may have to hack it some at any rate.
Personally, after having spent days with such efforts, I ended up back
with a woody install. Workstations (and quite likely, thin client
servers) interface well with the Sarge/Woody differences, and that's
most of my troubles.
I could have picked another release to install, but upgrades? Purely for
testing.
Good luck with your adventures. And prepare for it to take you some
hours of downtime.
