Apt uses the environment variable http_proxy and/or ftp_proxy. I think squid is
tuned to keep the downloaded .deb packages as long as it has space for them, but
only to keep Packages.gz a short time. 

This does at least work nice with sarge ltsp-servers, and woody main-server

It's tempting to resolv this bug as "INVALID" - any objections ?
