I guess you need to enable UTF-8 mode in the console.  Perhaps
<URL:http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~mgk25/unicode.html> is helpful?  Fedore
uses UTF-8 by default, and that is probably the reason you see the
right characters there.

Try doing the same in 'xterm -u8', to enable utf-8 mode in the xterm.
