Re: Creating Machine Accounts for MS WinClients

Hi,

I've sort of left Ralf doing my dirty work here, sorry.

A query came to me about the FAQ answer on the English website (which was
translated from the German one):

"How do I create machine accounts?
Login as local Administrator on the Windows machine. Set the networking to
use DHCP (dynamic ip address). Configure Windows to join the SMB Domain
SKOLELINUX. You will be prompted for a username & password which can join
the network. Give the Samba administration username and password. This will
create an account on the domain for that Windows machine."

The query moreorless said that the FAQ answer contradicted another method
which involved creating a unix account and using Webmin to convert it to a
samba one. I was concerned that there might be more than one way and that
somewhere else the other way was documented. It seems that would be likely
to create confusion.

I asked Ralf (as I think he wrote the original German one). I have set up
Samba in the past but have hated every minute of it and don't know much
about it (a situation I have little intention of remedying). On reflection
it looks like the current one is the correct answer. I might just flesh it
out a little to include more of the detail provided in the link below.

My own experience with the above is that Win98 will not prompt for a
username & password so I guess I can add that detail to make things more
clear.

Thanks, I'll add this to the answer too.

I see. I guess this is also true of WinXP Home Edition which seems to have
no domain capabilities.

I see from this link that WinXP Home Edition is not supported. It can of
course mount file shares by hand etc but it's a PITA to put it mildly.
