 In my opinion, unless bandwidth is really tight,
you don't want psychoacoustical sound compression 
between the thin clients and the server.  It would 
eat a lot of CPU on both ends.

Downsampling to 22050 Hz mono may be an option.
Using ADPCM (IMA4 or similar) will yield the
same bitrate (352 kb/s), and with no perceivable
loss.  I think IMA4 is symmetrical: Encoding is
not slower than decoding.
