Which I believe is what I said using other words.
As I understand it the X11 tcp-based communication protocol is XDMCP and
the difference between ltsp3 and sdm in that respect is wether or not
the XDMCP traffic is encapsulated by SSH or not.

Please correct me (again) if wrong.

It is like Vagrant wrote.
The difference is due to the fact that sdm is a locally running
displaymanager. The terminal comes up with X and starts sdm on it's
own. XDMCP isn't used at all.
kdm, xdm and the like are running on the server and are queried by X
running on the terminal for a displaymanager login window. XDMCP is
neccessary to achieve this.
