After installing a very stripped down sarge, I installed xdebconfigurator. 

runnign xdebconfigurator resulted in the following error message: 
Can't locate Getopt/Std.pm in @INC (@INC contains: /etc/perl /usr/local/lib/perl/5.8.3 /usr/local/share/perl/5.8.3 /usr/lib/perl5 /usr/share/perl5 /usr/lib/perl/5.8 /usr/share/perl/5.8 /usr/local/lib/site_perl .) at /usr/sbin/xdebconfigurator line 35.
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/sbin/xdebconfigurator line 35.
