It could very likely be a autonegotiate function which falls back to 10
Mbit somewhere, I had such a case in a school just today. A 10/100 3com
switch together with a GBit card ended up with 10 Mbit.
Some cards work with ethtool, others with mii-tool, both come on the
Skolelinux cd.
tjener:~# mii-tool eth0
eth0: no autonegotiation, 10baseT-HD, link ok
tjener:~# ethtool eth0
Cannot get device settings: Operation not supported
so, one works with this card, the other doesn't.
Try both and see what it tells you.
Also look at
man mii-tool (man:mii-tool in konqueror)
man eththool (man:eththool in konqueror)
