as to a good starting point read the architecture document which is at:

(beside norwegian it's available in da, de, en, nl, and pt versions)

I'm not saying you need to abondon your efforts for a livecd to use in 
schools, I'm just proposing you pool efforts to do so with Conrad who is 
also working on such a livecd.

basicly I don't see a reason for a livecd for schools to be a completely 
different project, lots of the issues are bound to be similar.
