You are aware of the fact that you then send your root-password across 
the open network?

The prefered way (a bit bothersome but much more secure is ssh-tunnels),

ssh tjener -L 1631:tjener:631
Then you can use https

https://localhost:1631

I'm sure there is more detailed info about this in the net, ssh and all 
it's options is great bedside reading.
