What you call manipulation is probably a lack of implementing what you

If the contents of the wiki shall be subject to historical and critical
study the possibility of data loss, manipulation and altering of meta
information (like timestamps) is indeed a grave issue. But is that what
the wiki is there for? Until today it did not occur to me.

If we want the wiki to serve that purpose we must either implement
social or technical (or best both) measures to ensure the integrity of
the data. That means:

1) consent of all users that such integrity is wanted and needed

2) strong crypto so that we can make sure that content has not been
tempered with

3) usenet-like robustness against failure of particular persons or
hardware (i. e. keep copies on other machines)

A really messy issue I dare not think about are the legal implications.
What if someone gets an injunction that requires removal of data?
