Debian Policy[0] 5.6.11. `Version':

        The <upstream_version> may contain only alphanumerics[1] and the
        characters `.'  `+' `-' `:' (full stop, plus, hyphen, colon) and
        should start with a digit.  If there is no <debian_revision>
        then hyphens are not allowed; if there is no <epoch> then colons
        are not allowed.

So although dpkg might support it, you're not actually permitted to use
it until Policy is updated.  (As I Understand Things)
