Subject: dselect: changes selections without notice
To: submit@bugs.debian.org
X-Mailer: bug 3.3.10.1
Delivered-To: submit@bugs.debian.org

Package: dselect
Version: 1.10
Severity: grave

Example:

libpisock4 is obsolete. It is currently marked as held '='.
I select '_' to remove it.

The conflict resolution window appears, telling me that
  gnome-pilot-conduits and gnome-pilot depend on libpisock4
and it suggests to change their status to '-'.

I disagree and re-mark them as held '='.
Then I press <enter> to leave.

On previous versions of dselect, this would have made the conflict
resolution pop up again, as per the (current) manpage dselect(1):

| By pressing enter, the currently displayed set of selec
| tions is accepted. If dselect detects no unresolved
| depends as a result of the requested selections, the new
| selections will be set. However, if there are any unre
| solveded depends, dselect will again prompt the user with
| a dependency resolution screen.

>From years of experience with previous versions of dselect, I expect
the resolution window to keep popping up until either I give up and
accept its suggestion, or I change to an acceptable configuration, or
I use 'Q' to force my selection to be used.

However, with this version of dselect, I am immediately returned to
the main listing and find that libpisock4 has now been marked '*'.

This is very worrying. Given this case, I am concerned about what other
changes to my selections dselect may make behind my back, some of which
changes might be very undesirable.

Surely such a drastic change in behaviour (if this is deliberate) should
be documented somewhere? (I couldn't find any notice in the changelog,
and the current behaviour appears to conflict with the dselect manpage.)

There was a typo in the changelog, so this closed #151663 (but that
bug's archived) rather than #151662 by mistake.

Thanks for uploading this fix!
