Bug#189805: improvment: use of sdiff to merge configuration-files

Package: dpkg
Version: 1.10.9
Severity: wishlist

Hi !

I use very often sdiff to merge existing configuration-files
with new files.

If I install packages with apt-get, and there is a new
configuration-file included in the package, i will get
a prompt which askes me which release of the configfile
i would like to use.

>sdiff --output=new.cfg old.cfg maintainer.cfg

This tool starts a interactive mode, which helps to merge
the mainter-file with the existing, and saves the merge to new.cfg.

Maybe this would be a nice additional alternative for
choosig what to do with the confog-file :-)

(Surely - a backup backup of the old one should also be included :-))

Best regards

Marc Schoechlin
