Bug#136110: Close 136110?
The wish here was not to make dpkg depend upon textutils, it was to make
/usr/bin/md5sum be the md5sum from textutils (as anyone coming from another
linux distribution would expect). Whether this means making the dpkg
version md5sum.dpkg (as opposed to the other way around;
md5sum.textutils), or making a diversion and having dpkg always use
md5sum (in which case, this can be reassigned to textutils). I think
the safest way to go is to use md5sum.dpkg, as doogie points out, having
dpkg call external programs can be problematic.

Buying a Unix machine guarantees you a descent into Hell. It starts when
you plug the computer in and it won't boot. Yes, they really did sell you
a $10,000 computer with an unformatted disk drive.
