Last month I sent a preliminary patch to get dpkg to build on non-Debian
systems, notably RedHat (GNU/)Linux 5.2 and (some GNU/)HP-UX.
I've done some cleaning up and testing; dpkg should build a bit easier=20
now on non-Debian systems.

Highlights:

  * Configure fixes, esp. cpu checks (autoconf, automake)
    + Arch fixes: automake/gcc -dumpmachine
    + Added configure checks, extended libc-extension
    + Fixes and instructions for hpux build
  * Fixed circular dependencies; configuration and compilation
    (and packaging) do not depend on an installed dpkg anymore.
    + Configure/build/package without dpkg installed;
      use newly built dpkg-* tools for packaging
    + Fixed dpkg-parsechangelog and dpgk-gencontrol '-L' switch
    + Added -L option to dpgk-gencontrol, passed on to dpgk-parsechangelog
  * Allow build/package without documentation:
    + build without doc:
       make -f debian/rules DOC=3Dno
    + Non-debian systems often do not have sgml* (or even tetex)
    + If you need to compile/port dpkg, the sgml/tetex dependency
      doesn't help
  * Minor install fixes man/man5
  * Allow non-root build/install/package.
    + (preliminary) support for installation at $HOME
    + While trying and building encountered wierd hpux bug/behaviour,
      mortal users can do
          chown root.root
  * Note that getopt* had to be included, because start-stop-daemon.c
    makes use of it.  While this should be fixed, I'm not planning to do
    it either :-)
  * Successful build on RedHat 5.2/i686, HP-UX-9.07


Being a non-Debian user who's very much interested in Debian, I've tried
from time to time to get dpkg to build on various non-Debian systems.  The=
=20
package manager is the entry point to the distribution, it tells me=20
something about the state the distribution is in.  Each time it failed
(RedHat 4.x, Cygnus GNU/Windows-NT, Linuxppc-R4, HP-UX), I get a bit less=
=20
enthousiastic about Debian, and decide to leave it for another year.
However, I'll keep trying, and hopefully, this helps (others) a bit

As an aside: last month I installed debian's unstable powerpc distribution.
It needs a lot of upgrading, and dselect is fine for that.  There may be
a silly bug, if eg dpkg-1.4.1.1 *and* dpkg-1.4.1.3 are both present in the=
=20
Package list, they're both selected.  I'll look into it as soon as I've
got a gdb for powerpc :-)

Hi,

This bug includes an old patch of yours to help build dpkg on non-Debian
systems (Red Hat and HP-UX). Most of the stuff won't apply properly on the
current dpkg, and I believe a significant amount of these issues were
settled during the last few years as we've made it portable to Solaris and
other systems, based on some other work and in part on this patch.

So I'm closing the bug because the patch as it is has no chance of getting
applied, and it's cluttering up the bug list.

Please don't hesitate to send over any other patches that you may have made
in the meantime. Separate chunks for each issue are preferable.

FWIW the current released dpkg version is 1.10 and it's available at
http://ftp.debian.org/debian/project/dpkg/
