Package: dpkg
Version: 1.9.20
Severity: important
`dpkg -l regexp' does not correctly print all the packages in the Debian
server which match the regexp.
For example:
eminescu:~$ dpkg -l gnu\*
Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
| Status=Not/Installed/Config-files/Unpacked/Failed-config/Half-installed
|/ Err?=(none)/Hold/Reinst-required/X=both-problems (Status,Err: uppercase=bad)
||/ Name Version Description
+++-==============-==============-============================================

ii gnugo 3.2-1 Plays the game of Go (Wei-Chi).
ii gnumeric 1.0.6-1 A GNOME spreadsheet application
un gnumeric-doc <none> (no description available)
un gnumeric-gda <none> (no description available)
un gnumeric-pytho <none> (no description available)
un gnupg <none> (no description available)
un gnupg-doc <none> (no description available)
ii gnuplot 3.7.2-4 A command-line driven interactive plotting p
un gnuserv <none> (no description available)
un gnutls <none> (no description available)
Another example:
eminescu:~$ dpkg -l gnuc\*
No packages found matching gnuc*.
However, the gnuchess package, for example, exists!
I use this method to find out if a package mathing a regexp exists or not.
In previous versions of dpkg (the one of the stable version, 1.6.15),
this bug does not appear.

It isn't supposed to, it is only supposed to list packages that are
listed in the dpkg status database. If dpkg has no status for a package
dpkg -l will not list it.
Try `apt-cache search' if you want to search through the complete list
of available packages.
