This is my #1 wish for dpkg.

Would anybody (Ian in particular) be opposed to me developing a patch
to fix this?

(I hope I'm not getting in over my head here.)

I know Ian has some ambitious plans for dpkg.  Perhaps somebody else
has already announced intentions to fix this.  I don't want to step on
any toes.
