Currently apt does not supercede anything. Instead it provides a new, different,
maybe better (I don't know), method of fetching, organizing and installing
packages.

PS: As a sidenote I tried apt, it forced me to do vi /var/lib/dpkg/status
three times where dselect/dpkg didn't force me. I still like the ftp-method
more, except that it can't handle more source locations which is a major
lack in my eyes.
