Had a very painful upgrade from sarge.  Details to follow later, but 
this particular error in the release-notes led me to apt-get, which may
have caused more trouble?  Who knows.

$ sudo aptitude --fix-broken install

aptitude 0.4.4


Of course the same document also refers correctly in a different place to aptitude -f install.
