Debian unstable/testing users should probably only enable safe upgrades that don't remove packages.
If I can be asked if I want to take part in the usage monitoring thing during the install process, could enabling auto updates be something I can be asked during the install process.
If Debian is about putting this power / choice in the hands of the user by having things enabled by default you are removing that choice.
It also treats users like they are people who have the intelligence to do this, rather than windows which seems more like 'I need to do things for you'
