Steve suggested a solution that would avoid the problem of sending
notifications.
But his solution cannot work properly without notifications.
It is very valuable that Steve started the discussion,
but his suggested solution might not be the best one.
Is "unattended-upgrades by default" actually a "very good" solution?
What would be alternatives?
Does "default" mean that this would happen without asking the user?
What are other distributions (not only Ubuntu) doing?
The Debian Cloud sprint is the background of this discussion.
What tools do people use to setup Debian cloud servers?
What options do these give to query the user during installation?
What notification options are available for these servers?
What UIs will the "inexperienced users" use to setup and manage
their servers?
unattended-upgrades (or something similar) will likely be part of any
good solution. But everyone should be aware that it is not a complete
solution, and it is worth to start by also searching for better solutions.
