Imageio is a Python library that provides an easy interface to read and write a wide range of image data, including animated images, volumetric data, and scientific formats. It is cross-platform, runs on Python 2.x and 3.x, and is easy to install.

The rationales behind the development of this library are explained in [1]. The upstream author considers the code base mature after 2 years of development and recently released it as a 1.0.

I believe this package to be a good fit for the numerical-computation blend from the Debian-science project, and should be maintained by the Debian science team.
