Teemu Hukkanen and me are working on packaging a new upstream
release. We sent a few patches upstream and upstream agreed to change
the build system. Then we noticed that the emacsen policy needs work
and drafted a few patches (+lintian tests) for that:

Probably after squeeze release it might be ok to upload to unstable
but I'd wait for Teemu's comment on that one.
