md5sum output format

Has the tech-ctte decision regarding the output format of md5sum [0] been 
withdrawn in some form?  It seems to be back to the old format:

$ md5sum </dev/null | cat -vet
d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427e  -$
