gcc 3.4 compile errors on inline (was: gcc-3.4 upload to unstable)

I received a FTBS for GCC 3.4 in #258559 dealing with the inline directive.
This is yet another round of incompatible changes introduced by the GCC. Has
anybody information if this particiular feature can be reconfigured, or if
it is a good idea to require a  lot of code fixes all over the place. (the
supplied patch looks a bit too complex for me most likely I will just remove
some of the inlines).
