For the nVidia network controller, you want the 'forcedeth' kernel module. It works very well for me.

I too have an ASUS A7N8X, and had severe lock-up issues with it. The solution is not disabling local APIC, as suggested by Martin. Instead, pass "apic_tack=2" as a kernel command line argument. Boot with "linux26 apic_tack=2" on the boot: line. This will work with kernels 2.6.5 and later.
