the "pure64" effords from us building the amd64 port are one part of a
whole, to get a system running at all. An earlier efford is a sparc64
like (and -based) biarch toolchain, wich is considered obsolete but to
actually (cross-)compile kernels. What actually is being worked on
(besides pure64) is the multiarch approach, as described in
http://raw.no/debian/amd64-multiarch-2.txt
and the other documents listed at
