I've raised this argument as a reduction ad absurdum quite a number of
times. It hasn't changed much, and quite frankly, I didn't see the
connection to these "editorial changes".

Fonts are firmware. They are little programs to be loaded into the
printer (especially true of Type 3 fonts 8-).
Current mail filters: many dial-up/DSL/cable modem hosts, and the
following domains: atlas.cz, bigpond.com, di-ve.com, netscape.net,
postino.it, tiscali.co.uk, tiscali.cz, tiscali.it, voila.fr.
