I've raised this argument as a reduction ad absurdum quite a number of
times.  It hasn't changed much, and quite frankly, I didn't see the
connection to these "editorial changes".

Fonts are firmware.  They are little programs to be loaded into the
printer (especially true of Type 3 fonts 8-).
