Perhaps there should be some way to say "I don't actually receive SMTP mail
on this machine, so don't run a server".

So, of the ones which didn't require deliberate installation, we have six
from FAM, 5 from inetd, lpd, exim4, and xfce4.  It sounds like the problems
are actually concentrated in a few packages.  :-P
