Are you sure? Comparing w3m and links on woody:
Depends: libc6 (>= 2.2.4-4), libgc6, libgpmg1 (>= 1.19.6-1), libncurses5 (>= 5.2.20020112a-1), zlib1g (>= 1:1.1.4)
Depends: libc6 (>= 2.2.4-4), libgpmg1 (>= 1.19.6-1), liblua40 (>=4.0-4), liblualib40 (>= 4.0-4)

Ignoring w3m's additional dependency on libncurses5 because it is
Priority: required you trade in libgc6 for liblua40 and liblualib40,
and libgc6 is even a little bit bigger than liblua40 and liblualib40
together.

Does either of these browsers' current version in sid support automatic
charset-conversion using iconv and nl_langinfo(CODESET)? - This is a
feature I am _really_ missing in woody's w3m.
