  "His Dark Materials" is a more recent take on this idea.  Same basic
idea, though.

  Another slightly "off-center" take on Christian mythology is Terry
Pratchett's "Good Omens", in which BOTH heaven and hell are 'evil',
albiet in slightly different ways.
