Maybe that's true for a Promise, but there are a few controllers
which are not supported under woody:
One I found in my installations is 
Compaq Smartarray 641 which is not supported by 2.4.18. 
You need a 2.4.21 at least. Compaq entry level server use that
for RAID. I solved by using a temporary scsi disc for installation
of woody (on the regular ultrascsi) and then migrating on the raid 
with a new kernel.

Also there are problem with new gigaethernet cards (3com, Broadcom,
etc). In those cases a 2.4.20 could suffice.
