My mistake above. It's the other way around - the chroot has 5.0.91, and
that's what breaks. 5.0 works correctly (5.0.91-2 is the latest in debian).
5.0.1 (IIRC) introduced a new function, utimens, which is a wraper around
the system utime and utimes calls. The latter is used only when it is known
to work (detected by autoconf) which seems to be the case on hppa, only it
seems to fail on hppa...
