 Forking packages outside of Debian might or might not achieve the goals
 you mention.  Forking packages inside Debian is not only problematic
 but idiotic.  Repeat after me: the package management system does not
 support package renames.  Upgrades across packages with different names
 simply doesn't work.  Going down that route for the little benefit of
 being elite^Wup to date for the sake of being up to date is not worth
 it.  Talk with the maintainer.  Or NMU.  Or make noise on -devel.  But
 don't "fork" packages.
