These are my usual reasons: examples of enlightened self-interest.

I don't see that or the above two reasons as corresponding in any way to 
"because it's there".  Do you see those reasons as corresponding to it?
Perhaps we simply have a different interpretation of the phrase.

I write software because it's fun; I write free software out of 
altruism; I write GPLed software because of a dislike for the idea of 
my code being 'taken proprietary'.  However, I contribute to *Debian* 
in particular because I use Debian and I want to improve it so as to 
improve my own computing experience.  None of those correspond to 
"Because it's there" in my head.  But maybe some of them do correspond 
for you.

I guess I also occasionally try to fix broken parts of Debian just 
because I hate seeing broken things and have an urge to fix them.  
Which *does* correspond to "because it's there".  Now, when I see 
people indulging *that* urge in Debian, I see them getting 
ignored or positively rejected, distubingly often, usually for 
trespassing on someone else's turf.  What does *that* say about Debian?
I don't know, but I don't like it.
