Right, the FIFO(implementation) is irrelevant for most users.

In the Un*x-world, this is called a daemon, so why not call it thus? And what
is it that makes it simple?
...consisting of a daemon and several controller-frontends.
Advantages are:

o Can be controlled via command-line(can it?) or one of several GUIs
