Erik,

It is going to get a lot worse, before it gets better.

We are currently in the midst of a major upgrade from g++-2.95 to g++-3.2 and 
there isn't any easy way to ease the upgrade during the transition period. 
(Hence unstable is the gathering areas for such packages)

If you need to have the stability you are after you should be running the 
stable/ testing distributions which are not undergoing such a rate of change, 
and once sufficient C++ packages have migrated they too will find their way 
into testing, but in a sane state...
