Re: Are we losing users to Gentoo?

In case anyone missed it (and is interested;-), there was some notes
about mandrake vs gentoo short after mdks last release.

It seemed that the gentoo users were quite unhappy when their "ultra
high speed, recompiled for MY cpu" distro being significantly slower
then plain mdk, at least as kde apps concerned.
Some people claimed that (the assumed evil) mandrake people had
modified the kde source, making their standard i586-compiled (at least I
think it was 586) version faster then the "plain" code compiled "for MY
cpu" using gentoo. Perhaps it's more about making good applications
than optimizing not so good...

And as someone mentioned (more or less); sysadmins (as myself when
working) want things that work, without the {
recompile,test,discard,<and repeat> } cycle.
People using linux for pleasure (as myself when not working) just
include unstable and perhaps a few other extra lines in their
apt-sources and can be happy too.
And when you're really bored, you compile something from scratch, it's
not like it's impossible just because you don't kneed to...

Best regards,
	Emil
