Let I wrote few words from me about desktop in Debian.
I used GNOME 1.4 (first with sawfish then with windowmaker) with
ROX-Filer (nautilus was too slow on my Duron 600/256MB SDRAM), then
tries to use GNOME 2 also with ROX-Filer (all from Debian packages -
unstable/experimental - except rox - my package). I tried nautilus2 and
found it unusable for me (with windowmaker 0.80) - still slow, too much
gnomish - why I must go into GNOME prefs if I want to change run action
of file type? (in ROX-Filer I can make it in less then minute - in
nautilus prefs are loaded after few).
Debian 'sid' now doesn't have desktop..
gnome 1.4 is (nearly) removed - I have gnome-control-center-1.4 (made by
dpkg-repack from original gnome-control-center 1.4 package to be
installable with gnome-control-center 2.x installed) package to have
ability to configure GTK1 look&feel.
GNOME 2 needs NETWM window manager to have usable desktop pager so
WindowMaker from Debian is not good.. I hacked it with netwm.patch from
windowmaker-dev mailing list but then gnome-session starts more then
minute waiting for windowmaker.. I tried metacity but it is
unconfigurable too much for me (how to get sylpheed ALWAYS on 3rd
desktop etc), so I had to choose sawfish? I used it before and get to
windowmaker from it.
At now I gave a chance to KDE3 - without kdesktop (still with ROX-Filer -
packages are aptable from address in my signature) but with panel, menu
in which I have all applications not only few like it was in GNOME2
(GNOME 1.4 has much better menu then GNOME2) and kwin which is nearly
like metacity.. no config, no forcing application to be ONLY and ALWAYS
on 3rd desktop.
After about two weeks I will choose - which part of desktop enviroment
to use but I think that it wont be GNOME2 - maybe GNOME 2.4 will be able
to replace GNOME 1.4 but when it will be...
