The page http://www.htmlhelp.com/tools/validator/differences.html lists
some differences (they aren't many) between the two versions. They do
basically the same job, but the w3c validator is seen by many people as the
standard program for HTML validation, so I think it is worth being
packaged. In addition, it is under heavy development and many features are
being added to make it the "Swiss army knife" of HTML checking (see for
example the page http://validator.w3.org:8001/todo.html). The linkchecker
is an example of such a feature that is not present in the wdg validator.
