Looks like you don't want to use gnome-termimal. What about xterm?
In gnome2 they have made a lot of design choice that for you can be
interpreted as bug. Because they want to provide a better usuability
experience they are hidding a lot of option. You can rely on editing
yourself the gconf tree or use something else.
