Then there's hdparm's -S option which sets drive spindown time.
And the -a setting for filesystem read ahead (which is related to the -A
option).
Can also control some APM with hdparm.
hdparm can force some cdroms to operate at a certain speed (could be useful
with a flaky drive)

hdparm does lots more than just playing with DMA.
