.tgz + split(1) + parchive does this just as well, though.  I've
disliked using rar for this since it's non-free, rather slow (in my
subjective experience; no benchmarks), and I don't like the interfaces
I've used (rar's commandline interface, which parchive unfortunately
copied, or the Windows GUIs.)

Maybe 7zip fixes some of these problems, though.  It seems to fix the
non-free part, at least.
